Untying sandals was the lowest task imaginable—even servants thought it was beneath them. John was saying: the gap between me and Jesus is infinite.

John the Baptist points away from himself and toward Jesus, making clear who the real star of this story is.

Where it sits in the story

John had crowds flocking to him, but he never lost sight of his role. He wasn't the main event—he was the opening announcement. And the One coming after him was in a category all His own.

The scholarly reading

John proclaimed one 'more powerful' (ho ischyroteros) coming after him, before whom he was unworthy to perform even a slave's task of unfastening sandals (lysai ton himanta tōn hypodēmatōn).

Language and setting

Untying sandals was considered too menial even for a Hebrew slave; it was relegated to Gentile servants. John's claim of unworthiness placed Jesus at a level of dignity beyond any human comparison.

Voice

John the Baptist speaks, subordinating himself radically to the coming Messiah while testifying to Jesus' supreme authority.

Significance

John's declaration set the proper relationship between forerunner and Messiah. Despite his enormous popularity, John insisted he was not even qualified for the lowliest servant's task in relation to the one coming after him.

5People went out to him from all of Jerusalem and the countryside of Judea. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

6John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.

7And he proclaimed: “After me will come One more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.

8I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
