The scholarly reading

The healed man disobeyed Jesus, widely proclaiming (kēryssein polla) his healing, which forced Jesus to remain outside towns (ep' erēmois topois). Yet people came to Him from every direction (pantothen).

Language and setting

The man's disobedience, while understandable, hindered Jesus' ministry strategy. Ironically, the leper who was previously confined to uninhabited places now moved freely in towns, while Jesus, who had healed him, was forced into the wilderness.

44“See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”

45But the man went out and openly began to proclaim and spread the news.
