He said, 'Don't tell anyone. Instead, go show yourself to the priest and make the offering Moses required for your cleansing—so everyone will know you're truly healed.'
Jesus wanted the man to follow the proper steps so he could be officially restored to his community. The priest's confirmation was the man's ticket back to normal life.
Jesus gives the healed man specific instructions: stay quiet about it, but go get officially certified as clean.
Jesus cared about the whole person—not just the disease, but the man's reintegration into society. He sent him to the priest because real restoration means being welcomed back into the community you were excluded from.
Jesus instructed the man to tell no one but to present himself to the priest and offer the Mosaic purification sacrifices (Leviticus 14:1-32), serving as a 'testimony to them' (eis martyrion autois).
The priestly certification served dual purposes: it restored the man to community life and provided official verification of the miracle. 'A testimony to them' may mean testimony to the priests of God's healing power in their midst.
Jesus gives the healed man specific instructions involving silence, priestly verification, and Levitical compliance.
Jesus honored the Mosaic law by directing the healed man to complete the prescribed purification ritual. The priestly verification would serve as authoritative documentation of the miracle within the religious establishment.
42And immediately the leprosy left him, and the man was cleansed.
43Jesus promptly sent him away with a stern warning:
44“See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
45But the man went out and openly began to proclaim and spread the news.
