As Jesus walked along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, He spotted Simon and his brother Andrew throwing a fishing net into the water—they were fishermen by trade.
Jesus didn't go to the seminary or the temple to find His first followers. He went to the waterfront. He meets people where they are, in the middle of their everyday lives.
Mark sets the scene for the first calling of disciples by the lakeside.
It was just another day at work for Simon and Andrew. Nets in the water, fish to catch. They had no idea that the most important invitation of their lives was about to walk up to them on the shore.
Walking beside the Sea of Galilee, Jesus saw Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew casting a fishing net (amphiblestron), as they were professional fishermen (halieis).
The Sea of Galilee (Lake of Gennesaret/Tiberias) was an active commercial fishery. Simon and Andrew were not destitute but working tradesmen, making their decision to leave everything more costly.
Mark narrates Jesus' encounter with the first disciples, setting the scene beside the Sea of Galilee.
Jesus chose His first followers not from the religious elite but from the working class. The sea that provided their livelihood would become the backdrop for many of His most important teachings and miracles.
