The scholarly reading

Jesus' inaugural proclamation contains four elements: the time is fulfilled (peplērōtai ho kairos), the kingdom of God has drawn near (ēngiken hē basileia tou theou), repent (metanoeite), and believe in the gospel (pisteuete en tō euangeliō).

Language and setting

Kairos ('appointed time') denotes qualitative, decisive time rather than mere chronological time (chronos). The perfect tense peplērōtai indicates that God's eschatological timetable has reached its culmination.

Jesus delivers His programmatic summary of the gospel message, condensing the entire kingdom announcement into one sentence.

Significance

In a single sentence, Jesus declared that all of salvation history had reached its climax. The wait was over, God's kingdom was breaking in, and the proper response was a complete reorientation of life (repentance) and trust in the good news.

15“The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!”

16As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

17“Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
