People knew Jesus was extraordinary but could not quite place Him. They compared Him to the greatest figures in their history. They were close, but not close enough. Jesus was bigger than any category they had.

The guessing game about Jesus' identity was in full swing. Elijah? An ancient prophet returned? People reached for the biggest names they knew, but Jesus exceeded them all.

The scholarly reading

Additional popular theories identify Jesus as Ēlias ('Elijah') who had appeared (ephanē) or as a prophētēs tis tōn archaiōn ('one of the ancient prophets') who had arisen. These categories reflect Jewish eschatological expectations about prophetic figures preceding the Messiah.

Language and setting

The identification with Elijah reflects Malachi 4:5's promise of Elijah's return before the Day of the Lord. The 'prophet of old' category draws on Deuteronomy 18:15's promise of a prophet like Moses. These speculations frame but fall short of recognizing Jesus' true identity.

People offered competing theories about Jesus: some said Elijah had finally returned, others believed one of the ancient prophets had risen. Each theory captured something true but missed the full reality.

6So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.

7When Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, he was perplexed. For some were saying that John had risen from the dead,

9“I beheaded John,” Herod said, “but who is this man I hear such things about?” And he kept trying to see Jesus.
