Jesus' agricultural metaphor declares oudeis epibalōn tēn cheira ep' arotron kai blepōn eis ta opisō ('no one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back') is euthetos ('fit/suitable') for the kingdom. Plowing required constant forward focus; looking back produced crooked furrows and wasted effort.

Language and setting

The plowing image demands single-minded, forward-facing commitment. The allusion to Lot's wife (Genesis 19:26) and Israel's nostalgic longing for Egypt (Numbers 11:5) warns against the gravitational pull of the past on kingdom commitment.
