Jesus replied, 'Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.' Following Him means giving up the security everyone else takes for granted.
Jesus did not promise comfort or stability. He promised a life on the move, without guarantees. Before you follow, know what you are signing up for. He would rather lose a follower than gain a disillusioned one.
Jesus gives a honest response to the eager volunteer.
Jesus painted a vivid picture: animals have more security than I do. Foxes go home to dens and birds to nests, but I have nowhere to rest. Still want to follow?
Jesus' response contrasts alōpekes ('foxes') with phōleous ('dens') and peteina tou ouranou ('birds of the air') with kataskēnōseis ('nests'), while ho huios tou anthrōpou ('the Son of Man') has nowhere to klinē tēn kephalēn ('lay His head'). The saying reveals the radical homelessness of Jesus' itinerant ministry.
By identifying Himself as 'Son of Man' rather than using first person, Jesus draws on Daniel 7's cosmic figure who receives all authority yet paradoxically lives without earthly security. Even animals have more material comfort than God's Messiah.
Jesus responds to the volunteer with a stark description of discipleship's cost.
