Jesus said, 'Whoever welcomes this child in My name welcomes Me, and whoever welcomes Me welcomes the One who sent Me. The least among you is the greatest.'

Jesus flipped the greatness ladder upside down. In His kingdom, status comes not from climbing over others but from stooping to welcome the smallest and least impressive. That is where you find God.

Jesus teaches a chain of reception: welcoming this paidion ('child') en tō onomati mou ('in My name') equals welcoming Jesus, which equals welcoming ton aposteilanta me ('the One who sent Me'). The concluding paradox: ho mikroteros en pasin hymin ('the least among you all') houtos estin megas ('this one is great').

Language and setting

The chain of identification (child→Jesus→Father) establishes the theological principle that God is encountered in the least significant members of society. The reversal of greatness—the least is the greatest—directly answers the disciples' argument and embodies the kingdom's inverted values.

Significance
