Even as the boy was coming to Jesus, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

Why it's here

The demon fought to the very end, but it was no match for Jesus. With a word, Jesus did what the demon had resisted and the disciples had failed to accomplish. The boy was free and back in his father's arms.

Where it sits in the story

The demon attacked one last time, throwing the boy down violently. But Jesus spoke, the demon obeyed, and the boy was healed. Then came the most beautiful moment: Jesus placed the boy back in his father's arms.

The scholarly reading

Even during the boy's approach (eti proserchomenou), the demon errēxen ('threw down/convulsed') him and synesparaxen ('tore at him violently'). Jesus epitimēsen ('rebuked') the unclean spirit, iasato ('healed') the boy, and apedōken ('gave him back') to his father.

Language and setting

The demon's final violent attack during the approach intensifies the dramatic tension. The three-fold action of rebuking, healing, and restoring echoes Elijah returning the widow's son (1 Kings 17:23). 'Gave him back' emphasizes the relational restoration alongside physical healing.

Significance

The demon made one last violent assault as the boy approached Jesus, slamming him down in convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the spirit, healed the boy, and handed him back to his relieved father, whole and free.

40I begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”

41“O unbelieving and perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
