The household is engaged in ritualized mourning with klaion and ekoptonto ('weeping and mourning/beating their chests'). Jesus commands mē klaiete ('stop weeping') and redefines the girl's condition: ouk apethanen alla katheudei ('she has not died but is sleeping').

Jesus' statement that the girl 'sleeps' has been interpreted as either literal (she was comatose, not dead) or theological (death for believers is but sleep before resurrection). The mourners' subsequent laughter confirms they understood her as genuinely dead.
