The scholarly reading

The sower scatters sporos (seed) indiscriminately, reflecting ancient broadcasting sowing methods. The seed on the path is katepatēthē (trampled) and consumed by birds, representing total loss before any growth can occur.

Language and setting

This is the first of four soil types in the Parable of the Sower. Luke adds the detail of trampling, absent in Mark and Matthew, emphasizing the complete vulnerability of the exposed seed.

Significance

Jesus describes a farmer casting seed broadly across his fields. The first seed lands on the hard-packed path where feet trample it and birds swoop down to eat it, leaving nothing behind.

5“A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, where it was trampled, and the birds of the air devoured it.

6Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the seedlings withered because they had no moisture.

7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the seedlings.
