People came out to see what happened and found the formerly demon-possessed man sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind. Instead of celebrating, they were afraid.

Why it's here

The transformation was total: a naked, screaming man among the tombs was now calm, clothed, and clear-minded. But the people's fear shows that sometimes radical change unsettles us more than familiar brokenness.

When the townspeople arrived, the man they used to chain up was sitting peacefully at Jesus' feet, fully clothed and perfectly sane. But the sight scared them more than the demons ever had.

The scholarly reading

The townspeople find the formerly demonized man kathēmenon para tous podas tou Iēsou ('sitting at Jesus' feet'), himatismenon ('clothed'), and sōphronounta ('in his right mind'). These three details systematically reverse his prior condition: restless/seated, naked/clothed, insane/sane. They respond with ephobēthēsan ('they were afraid').

Language and setting

Sitting at Jesus' feet is a posture of discipleship (cf. Luke 10:39, Mary). The restoration of clothing, sanity, and social position represents comprehensive healing. Paradoxically, the community fears the healer more than they feared the demoniac.

Significance

The townspeople arrived to find a stunning transformation: the man who had terrorized the area was sitting calmly at Jesus' feet, dressed and completely sane. Instead of rejoicing, they were terrified.

33Then the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

34When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside.

35So the people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man whom the demons had left, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

36Meanwhile, those who had seen it reported how the demon-possessed man had been healed.

37Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to depart from them, because great fear had taken hold of them. So He got into the boat and started back.
