Simon judged both the woman and Jesus in one thought. He assumed that knowing who she was would mean rejecting her.

Where it sits in the story

Simon thought knowing the truth about someone means pushing them away. Jesus shows the opposite: knowing the truth about someone means loving them closer. That's the difference between religion and relationship.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

Simon's internal monologue (eipen en heautō, "said to himself") questions Jesus' prophetic credentials: ei houtos ēn prophētēs ("if this man were a prophet"), He would know the woman's sinful nature and refuse her touch.

Language and setting

Simon's logic assumes that prophetic knowledge would produce separation from sinners. He cannot conceive of a prophet who knowingly accepts a sinner's touch.

Voice

Simon the Pharisee thinks to himself, judging both the woman and Jesus.

Significance

Simon's unspoken criticism reveals his assumptions: prophets should enforce boundaries, not receive sinners' worship. His judgment of Jesus ironically proves that Jesus is indeed a prophet — because Jesus knows Simon's thoughts.
