Jesus' statement meizōn en gennētois gynaikōn prophētēs Iōannou oudeis estin ("among those born of women, no one is greater than John") places John at the apex of human history. Yet ho mikroteros en tē basileia tou theou meizōn autou estin ("the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he").

Language and setting

This paradox distinguishes two eras: John represents the pinnacle of the old covenant, yet the new covenant inaugurated by Jesus elevates even its least member above John's status.
