Everyone was filled with awe and praised God, saying, 'A great prophet is among us!' and 'God has come to help His people!'
They didn't fully understand yet who Jesus was, but they knew God was doing something extraordinary right in front of them.
The crowd responds with reverential awe and theological declarations.
When you witness God moving, the right response is awe and praise. These people knew they were seeing something they'd tell their grandchildren about. God was visiting His people in the flesh.
The crowd's phobos ("reverential fear") produces dual confessions: prophētēs megas ēgerthē ("a great prophet has arisen") and epeskepsato ho theos ton laon autou ("God has visited His people"). The verb episkeptomai ("visit") carries covenantal overtones.
The identification of Jesus as a great prophet and the language of divine visitation echo Zechariah's prophecy (Luke 1:68, 78) and link this event to Israel's messianic hopes.
The awestruck crowd glorifies God and declares their theological interpretation of the event.
The crowd correctly perceives that God is acting through Jesus but frames it in prophetic rather than messianic categories. Their response, while incomplete, recognizes the divine significance of what they witnessed.
