The scholarly reading

Jesus uses the metaphor of a wedding feast: huioi tou nymphōnos ("sons of the bridal chamber," i.e., wedding guests) cannot fast while the nymphios ("bridegroom") is present. This implicitly identifies Jesus as the messianic bridegroom.

Language and setting

The bridegroom metaphor has deep Old Testament roots, where God is portrayed as Israel's husband (Hosea, Isaiah, Jeremiah). Jesus applies this marital imagery to Himself.
