Tax collectors were hated — seen as traitors working for Rome. Nobody would have chosen Levi. But Jesus did.

Where it sits in the story

Jesus sees potential where everyone else sees a lost cause. Levi was the last person anyone expected to be called, and that's exactly why Jesus chose him. No one is too far gone for His invitation.

The scholarly reading

Jesus identifies Levi (identified as Matthew in Matthew's Gospel) sitting at the telōnion ("tax booth"), a customs station for collecting duties on goods. The imperative akolouthei moi ("follow Me") is a rabbinic call to discipleship.

Language and setting

Tax collectors (telōnai) were despised as collaborators with Rome and considered ritually unclean. Jesus' call to a tax collector is deliberately provocative and countercultural.

Jesus initiates direct contact with Levi, calling him to discipleship.

Significance

The call of Levi expands the boundaries of Jesus' movement beyond fishermen to include the socially marginalized. Jesus' deliberate choice of a tax collector signals that His kingdom operates by different standards than religious convention.

25And immediately the man stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God.

26Everyone was taken with amazement and glorified God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”

27After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him,

28and Levi got up, left everything, and followed Him.

29Then Levi hosted a great banquet for Jesus at his house. A large crowd of tax collectors was there, along with others who were eating with them.
