The scholarly reading

Jesus makes the stunning declaration: 'Today (sēmeron) this Scripture is fulfilled (peplērōtai) in your hearing (en tois ōsin hymōn).' The perfect tense peplērōtai indicates completed fulfillment in the present moment.

Language and setting

This single sentence is perhaps the most audacious claim in the Gospel. 'Today' collapses the distance between prophetic promise and present reality. Jesus claims to be Isaiah 61's anointed figure.

Significance

In seven words in Greek, Jesus claims to be the fulfillment of seven centuries of prophetic hope. Isaiah's Anointed One is not coming someday—He is speaking right now, in this very synagogue.

22All spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” they asked.

23Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard that You did in Capernaum.’”
