For forty days Jesus was in the wilderness being tempted by the devil, eating nothing the entire time. By the end, He was starving.
Forty days mirrors Israel's forty years in the desert. Where Israel failed every test, Jesus would pass them all—showing what perfect trust in God looks like.
Luke describes the extreme conditions of Jesus' testing.
Forty days without food in the desert. Jesus is at His most physically vulnerable when the devil attacks. But physical weakness doesn't mean spiritual weakness.
For forty days (hēmeras tesserakonta), Jesus is tempted (peirazomenos) by the devil while fasting. The forty-day period parallels Moses (Exodus 34:28) and Elijah (1 Kings 19:8).
The number forty carries rich biblical symbolism: Israel's forty years in the wilderness, Moses' forty days on Sinai. Jesus relives Israel's wilderness experience but succeeds where Israel failed.

Jesus fasts for forty days in the desert, recapitulating Israel's wilderness journey. Where Israel failed through complaint and idolatry, Jesus will succeed through faithfulness to God's word.
