What It Means

Luke 3:16, in plain English

Why it's here

Untying sandals was the job of the lowest servant. John is saying the gap between him and Jesus is immeasurable. And while John uses water, Jesus will bring the very Spirit of God.

The scholarly reading

John definitively distinguishes himself from the Messiah: he baptizes with water, but the Coming One will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. John is unworthy even to untie His sandals (hypodēmata).

Language and setting

Untying sandals was a task too menial even for Jewish slaves—only Gentile slaves performed it. John places himself below the lowest social rank relative to the Messiah, emphasizing the vast gap between them.

John answers the messianic speculation by pointing to one far greater than himself.

Significance

John seizes the moment to redirect all attention away from himself. He is not even worthy to perform the lowest slave's task for the Coming One, who will baptize not with water but with the Spirit and fire.
