Terrified, the women bowed to the ground as the two men asked why they were looking for someone alive in a place for the dead.
This question is one of the most powerful in all of Scripture — it gently challenges you to stop looking for hope in hopeless places.
The angels speak directly to the women, turning their grief upside down with a single question.
The women came looking for a dead body, but heaven asked them why. Sometimes the answer to your deepest pain is a question that changes everything.
The women prostrate themselves in reverential terror (Greek: emphobōn, 'seized with fear'), and the angels pose a rhetorical question challenging their expectations.
The question 'Why do you seek the living among the dead?' (ton zōnta meta tōn nekrōn) reframes the entire resurrection as a category error — Jesus does not belong in the realm of the dead.
The two angelic messengers address the women at the tomb with a probing question.
The women's posture of fear before the angels echoes Old Testament theophanies. The angels redirect their focus from a tomb to a truth.
3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4While they were puzzling over this, suddenly two men in radiant apparel stood beside them.

7‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’”
