The Last Night
“If You are the Christ, tell us.” Luke 22:67 · Berean Standard Bible
The council demands, 'Tell us if You're the Messiah.' Jesus answers honestly: 'If I tell you, you won't believe Me anyway.' He sees right through their pretend curiosity.
They're not asking because they want to know. They're asking because they need Him to say it so they can use it against Him.
Jesus responds with clear-eyed honesty, refusing to play along with a trial where the verdict has already been written.
It's a trap question and Jesus knows it. They don't want truth — they want a conviction. So Jesus names what's really happening: 'You've already made up your minds. Nothing I say will change that.' It's a powerful moment of truth in a room full of lies.
The council demands: 'Ei sy ei ho Christos, eipon hēmin' (If You are the Christ, tell us). Jesus responds that telling them would be futile because 'ou mē pisteusēte' (you absolutely will not believe). The double negative emphasizes the impossibility of their belief.
Jesus' response exposes the disingenuous nature of their question. They don't ask seeking truth but seeking a confession to use against Him. His answer refuses to play their game while maintaining His claim.
The Sanhedrin questions Jesus about His messianic identity, and Jesus responds by exposing their bad faith — they wouldn't believe regardless of His answer.
The question sounds open-minded: 'Tell us if you're the Messiah.' But Jesus sees through it. They don't want an answer — they want ammunition. His response is devastating: 'If I tell you, you won't believe.' He refuses to participate in a rigged trial.
65And they said many other blasphemous things against Him.
66At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, met together. They led Jesus into their Sanhedrin and said,
67“If You are the Christ, tell us.”
68And if I ask you a question, you will not answer.
69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
