Jesus reveals 'egō edethēn peri sou' (I have prayed for you, singular) — personal intercession specifically for Peter. His faith (pistis) will not ekleipē (fail completely/be extinguished). The command 'strengthen (stērison) your brothers' envisions Peter's restoration and pastoral leadership.

Language and setting

The prayer assumes Peter will fall but not permanently. 'When you have turned back' (epistrepsas) is remarkable — Jesus predicts both Peter's denial and his repentance, and commissions him for post-failure ministry.

Jesus speaks as intercessor and prophet, simultaneously predicting Peter's failure, guaranteeing his restoration, and assigning him a future ministry of strengthening others.

Significance
