The scholarly reading

Jesus declares 'hymeis de ouch houtōs' (but you, not so) — a categorical rejection of worldly power structures. The meizon (greatest) should become hōs ho neōteros (like the youngest), and the hēgoumenos (leader) like the diakonōn (one who serves).

Language and setting

In ancient culture, the youngest had the least status and served the elders. Jesus' reversal is radical: greatness in His kingdom is measured by willingness to occupy the lowest position and serve others.

Jesus directly addresses His disciples with a counter-cultural command, completely inverting the world's hierarchy of greatness.

Significance
