Think about this: Jesus just offered His body and blood for everyone at the table, including the one who would betray Him. He served Judas, loved Judas, and broke bread with Judas — knowing exactly what Judas was about to do.

The scholarly reading

Jesus reveals awareness of the betrayal: 'the hand of the one betraying Me (tou paradidontos me) is with Mine on the table.' The present participle paradidontos indicates ongoing action — the betrayer is currently at the table.

Language and setting

Luke places this revelation after the institution of the Eucharist (unlike Matthew and Mark who place it before), heightening the horror: Judas has just participated in the covenant meal he is about to violate.

Voice

Jesus speaks with prophetic knowledge, exposing the betrayer's presence at the very table of the new covenant without directly naming him.

Significance

The most intimate setting becomes the most treacherous. The hand that will point soldiers to Jesus rests on the same table where the new covenant was just inaugurated. The betrayer has eaten the bread of Christ's body and now prepares to hand that body over to death.

19And He took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
