The scholarly reading

The anagaion mega estrōmenon (large upper room, already furnished) indicates a wealthy household with a spacious second-story room prepared with dining couches and Passover necessities. Estrōmenon means 'spread out/furnished.'

Language and setting

Upper rooms (hyperōon) became significant gathering places for early Christians (Acts 1:13, 20:8). This room may have been the same location where the disciples gathered after the ascension.

12And he will show you a large upper room, already furnished. Make preparations there.”

13So they went and found it just as Jesus had told them. And they prepared the Passover.

14When the hour had come, Jesus reclined at the table with His apostles.
