But if they say 'from people,' the crowd will turn on them because everyone believed John was a real prophet. They're trapped.
They can't tell the truth because it condemns them, and they can't lie because the crowd will riot. Jesus has boxed them in perfectly.
The leaders calculate the other risk — the crowd's reaction — revealing that fear drives their decisions, not truth.
The trap is complete. Every exit is blocked. Their entire strategy of controlling the narrative just collapsed because Jesus asked one honest question.
The second horn: if they say 'from men,' the people will stone them, since the populace was convinced (pepeismenon) John was a prophet. Their fear of the crowd reveals they serve public opinion, not truth.
The threat of stoning indicates how deeply the people revered John. The leaders' fear of violent reprisal further demonstrates that their decision-making is entirely political — they are trapped between two fears rather than liberated by truth.
The leaders identify the second danger: denying John's authority would provoke the people's violent response.
Neither answer is safe. They fear the people too much to deny John and fear the truth too much to affirm him. Jesus has exposed their fundamental problem: they serve their own power, not God.
