The third married her, and eventually all seven did — and all died without children.
Seven brothers, one wife, zero children. The setup is complete. Now comes the question they think has no answer.
The Sadducees finish building their elaborate scenario.
Seven brothers later, the stage is set for what they think is the ultimate unanswerable question.
The third brother and then all seven follow the same pattern — each marries the widow and dies childless. The completeness of the scenario (all seven) creates the maximum dilemma.
The thoroughness of the scenario — all seven brothers, no children with any of them — eliminates any possible escape from the question about to follow.
