Jesus quotes Psalm 118:22 about the stone the builders rejected becoming the cornerstone (kephalēn gōnias). He looks directly at them (emblepsas), making the application personal and unavoidable.

Language and setting

Psalm 118:22 was already understood messianically in early Christianity (Acts 4:11, 1 Peter 2:7). The 'builders' represent the religious leaders; the 'stone' is Jesus. What they reject, God makes foundational.
