When the tenants see the son, they don't respect him — they plot to kill him. 'If we kill the heir,' they reason, 'the inheritance will be ours.'
The religious leaders are hearing their own plan described back to them in a story. They're the tenants, and the son they're about to kill is standing right in front of them.
The tenants reveal their murderous scheme, turning the owner's generosity into their greatest opportunity for evil.
The most generous act meets the most wicked response. The son came in hope; they see him as an obstacle. Their plan is cold and calculated: murder for inheritance.
The tenants see the son, recognize him as the heir (klēronomos), and conspire to kill him to seize the inheritance. Their calculation is that eliminating the heir transfers ownership to them.
The tenants' reasoning reflects a twisted legal logic — in some ancient contexts, unclaimed property could be seized by occupants. Their recognition of the son as heir makes their crime premeditated, not accidental.
The tenants conspire upon seeing the son, plotting murder to steal the inheritance.
The tenants recognize the heir and instead of respect, they see opportunity. Kill the son, and the vineyard is theirs. The parable has reached its darkest moment — the beloved son is about to die.
12Then he sent a third, but they wounded him and threw him out.
13‘What shall I do?’ asked the owner of the vineyard. ‘I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.’
14But when the tenants saw the son, they discussed it among themselves and said, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
15So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
16He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.”
