The scholarly reading

An angel of the Lord (angelos kyriou) appears suddenly (epestē), and the divine glory (doxa kyriou) illuminates them, causing great fear (ephobēthēsan phobon megan).

Language and setting

The theophanic pattern—divine appearance, glory, and fear—follows Old Testament precedents (Exodus 3, Isaiah 6, Ezekiel 1). The shepherds' terror is the appropriate human response to divine holiness.

Significance
