The angel declares that today (sēmeron) in David's city, a Savior (sōtēr) has been born who is Christ (Christos) the Lord (kyrios). Three titles—Savior, Christ, Lord—compress the full messianic identity.

Language and setting

Sōtēr was a title claimed by Augustus; Christos is the Greek equivalent of Hebrew Mashiach ('Anointed One'); Kyrios asserts divine lordship. Luke stacks these titles to declare Jesus' supreme identity.
