The king says, 'At least you could have put it in the bank and I'd have gotten some interest!' Even the bare minimum would have been better than nothing.

God isn't asking for perfection. He's asking for effort. The smallest step of faith is infinitely better than hiding what He's given you.

The king points out that even the easiest possible action was better than the nothing this servant offered.

You didn't have to be a business genius. You just had to do something. The gap between the bare minimum and nothing is enormous in God's kingdom.

The scholarly reading

The king asks why the servant did not at least deposit the money in a bank (trapezan) to earn interest (syn tokō). Even the minimum effort of banking would have been acceptable over total inaction.

Language and setting

Money-lending with interest was practiced in the Greco-Roman world despite Jewish prohibitions on charging fellow Jews interest (Deuteronomy 23:19-20). The bank represents the lowest threshold of responsible stewardship.

Voice

The king questions the servant's failure to take even the simplest, lowest-risk action available.

Significance

The rebuke cuts deeper: you didn't have to be a genius investor — you just had to deposit it in a bank. The servant couldn't even clear the lowest bar of stewardship.
