As Jesus gets close to Jericho, there's a blind man sitting by the road, begging. He can't see, but he's about to show more spiritual sight than anyone else in the story.
Right after we're told the disciples couldn't understand Jesus, we meet a blind beggar who sees more clearly than they do. The contrast is intentional and powerful.
Luke sets the scene for a miracle that's about much more than physical healing.
A blind man sits in the dust beside the road, dependent on the charity of strangers. Jesus is about to walk by, and this man's response will put the disciples' confusion to shame.
As Jesus approaches Jericho, a blind beggar is positioned beside the road. Luke places this healing immediately after the disciples' spiritual blindness (v. 34), creating a powerful narrative contrast between physical and spiritual sight.
Jericho was a prosperous city near Jerusalem, a major thoroughfare for pilgrims. The juxtaposition of physical blindness (the beggar) with spiritual blindness (the disciples) is a deliberate Lukan literary technique.
Luke narrates the setting for the healing of the blind man near Jericho.
The scene shifts from the disciples who cannot see spiritual truth to a blind man sitting by the road who, ironically, will demonstrate the clearest spiritual insight in the passage.
33They will flog Him and kill Him, and on the third day He will rise again.”
34But the disciples did not understand any of these things. The meaning was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend what He was saying.
35As Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting beside the road, begging.
36When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening.
37“Jesus of Nazareth is passing by,” they told him.
