Jesus details the specific sufferings: He will be delivered (paradothēsetai) to the Gentiles and subjected to mockery, insult, and spitting. The passive voice ('will be delivered') implies both divine sovereignty and human betrayal.

Language and setting

Delivery to Gentiles (the Romans) adds a new detail to earlier predictions. The catalog of abuses — mocking, insulting, spitting — echoes the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 50:6 and 53:3.
