As Jesus enters a village, ten men with leprosy meet Him — standing at a distance because that's what the law required. They couldn't come close to anyone.
Leprosy meant total isolation from society, family, and worship. These men had lost everything. And their shared suffering brought Jews and Samaritans together.
Luke describes the scene with a detail that hits hard: they 'stood at a distance.' That was their whole life — at a distance from everyone.
Ten men, quarantined by disease, standing far off from the one person who could help them. The distance between them and Jesus was about to close.
Ten lepers (deka leproi andres) meet Jesus at a village entrance, maintaining the legally required distance (estēsan porrōthen, 'stood at a distance') per Levitical purity laws (Lev 13:45-46).
Leprosy (lepra) in biblical usage covered various skin diseases that rendered a person ritually unclean and socially isolated. The group of ten crossing ethnic lines (Jew and Samaritan together) shows how shared suffering dissolved social barriers.
Luke narrates the encounter, emphasizing the lepers' physical distance which reflects their social and religious exclusion.

13and raised their voices, shouting, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
14When Jesus saw them, He said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were on their way, they were cleansed.
