The father orders the 'best robe' (stolēn tēn prōtēn, literally 'the first robe'), a ring (daktylion), and sandals (hypodēmata) — each symbolizing restored status: the robe for honor, the ring for authority, and sandals for sonship (slaves went barefoot).

Language and setting

These three items constitute a complete reversal of the son's degradation: robes restore dignity, the signet ring grants authority to act on the family's behalf, and sandals distinguish sons from servants.
