The scholarly reading

The phrase 'came to himself' (eis heauton elthōn) is a Hellenistic idiom for regaining sanity or moral awareness. The son's comparison of his father's servants' abundance with his own destitution sparks repentance.

Language and setting

This moment of self-awareness is the theological pivot of the parable — the beginning of repentance, driven not initially by spiritual conviction but by the contrast between his misery and his father's generosity.

Voice

The son speaks to himself in an interior monologue that represents the awakening of conscience and the first step toward return.

Significance
