Jesus draws the application: 'any one of you who does not give up everything he has' (pas... hos ouk apotassetai pasin tois heautou hyparchousin) cannot be His disciple. The verb apotassetai means 'to take leave of' or 'renounce.'

Language and setting

This is the third 'cannot be my disciple' statement (after vv. 26, 27), forming a climactic triad that defines discipleship as total renunciation of family, self, and possessions.
