What It Means

The scholarly reading

The demand to 'hate' (misei) family members employs Semitic hyperbole, meaning to 'love less by comparison' (cf. Gen 29:31, Deut 21:15). The inclusion of 'even his own life' (psychēn heautou) extends the demand beyond social ties to self-renunciation.

Language and setting

This is Luke's intensified version of the discipleship demand (cf. Matt 10:37 using 'loves more than me'). Luke's addition of 'wife' and 'own life' makes the requirement more comprehensive.

Voice

Jesus addresses the large crowds directly with radical demands, using intentionally shocking language to communicate the absolute primacy of allegiance to Him.

Significance

Jesus drops a bombshell on the crowd: unless your devotion to Me surpasses every other loyalty — family, spouse, even your own survival — you can't be My disciple.
