Luke 12:52

Do Not Be Afraid

From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. Luke 12:52 · Berean Standard Bible
What It Means

Luke 12:52, in plain English

In a family of five, three will stand against two and two against three. Following Jesus can put you at odds with the people you love most. It's painful, but it's real.

Why it's here

Jesus is preparing His followers for one of the hardest parts of faith: when your family doesn't understand your commitment to Him. He wants you ready for that cost.

Who's speaking

Jesus gets specific about the family divisions that come from following Him.

Where it sits in the story

This is one of the hardest truths in the Gospels. The gospel can bring conflict into your own home. Jesus doesn't hide this -- He prepares you for it.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

A household of five will be diamerismenoi (divided): three against two and two against three. The specificity of numbers indicates that division penetrates the most intimate sphere of human society -- the family unit.

Language and setting

The five-member household represents a typical extended family. Jesus' prediction that the kingdom creates intra-family conflict echoes Micah 7:6 and reflects the early church's experience of family rejection.

Voice

Jesus describes the specific domestic divisions that following Him will cause.

Significance

Jesus makes the cost concrete: families will split over Him. This isn't a failure of the gospel but its natural consequence in a world that resists God's kingdom.

In context

Luke 12:50–54

50But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!

51Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but division.

52From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three.

53They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

54Then Jesus said to the crowds, “As soon as you see a cloud rising in the west, you say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and that is what happens.

Read all of Luke 12 — Sparrows, barns, and a thief in the night — Jesus teaches his followers to stop hoarding and start trusting. Worry is the opposite of faith.
