Do Not Be Afraid
And the Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their portion at the proper time? Luke 12:42 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus answers with a question: 'Who is the faithful, wise manager that the master puts in charge of feeding the household at the right time?' He's describing what real spiritual leadership looks like.
Instead of saying 'yes, this is about you,' Jesus paints a picture of what it looks like to steward responsibility well. It's about serving others, not ruling them.
Jesus responds to Peter's question by describing the kind of leader God is looking for.
Jesus turns Peter's question into a lesson about stewardship. Leadership isn't about status -- it's about faithfully caring for the people God entrusts to you.
Jesus responds with a question about the pistos oikonomos ho phronimos (faithful and wise steward/manager) whom the master (kyrios) appoints over his therapeia (household servants) to distribute sitometrion (food ration) at the proper time (en kairō).
The oikonomos held a position of delegated authority, managing the master's resources for the benefit of the household. This is a stewardship parable directed at leaders -- answering Peter's question implicitly.
Jesus responds to Peter's question with a counter-question about the qualities of a good steward.
Rather than answering Peter directly, Jesus describes the ideal leader: faithful, wise, caring for others with what the Master provides. The parable is ultimately about every person entrusted with God's resources.
40You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect.”
41“Lord,” said Peter, “are You addressing this parable to us, or to everyone else as well?”
42And the Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their portion at the proper time?
43Blessed is that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.
44Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
