Jesus is building a logical case for trust. If God gave you life, He'll sustain it. If He gave you a body, He'll clothe it. The bigger gift proves He'll handle the smaller ones.

The scholarly reading

Life (psychē) is more (pleion) than food (trophēs), and the body (sōma) more than clothing (endymatos). The argument from greater to lesser: if God gave the greater gift (life itself), surely He will provide the lesser (food and clothing).

Language and setting

This logical argument echoes Romans 8:32: if God did not spare His own Son, how will He not freely give us all things? The one who gave life will sustain life.
