Nothing stays hidden forever. Everything covered up will eventually be uncovered. Everything done in secret will eventually come to light. So why pretend?

Why it's here

This is both a warning and a relief. If you're hiding something, it won't stay hidden. But if you're doing good that nobody sees, God sees it and will bring it to light too.

Jesus gives a universal principle that applies to everyone: the truth always comes out eventually.

Where it sits in the story

Jesus is saying: hypocrisy is a terrible investment. It takes so much energy to maintain, and in the end, everything gets revealed anyway. Live authentically -- it's the only strategy that works.

The scholarly reading

The principle of eschatological disclosure: all that is synkekalymmenon (concealed) will be apokalyphthēsetai (uncovered), and krypton (hidden) will be gnōsthēsetai (made known). Hypocrisy ultimately fails because God brings everything to light.

Language and setting

This saying works both as warning (hidden sins will be exposed) and encouragement (hidden faithfulness will be vindicated). The passive voice ('will be disclosed') implies divine agency in the unveiling.

Jesus teaches that all concealment is temporary -- God will ultimately expose everything hidden.

Significance

Jesus grounds the warning against hypocrisy in eschatological reality: pretense is futile because a day of full disclosure is coming. Everything hidden will eventually be seen.
