This verse is the setup for everything that follows -- the rich fool parable, the teaching about worry, the call to seek God's kingdom. It all starts here: life isn't about stuff.
Jesus warns the crowd to guard (phylassesthe) against all forms of pleonexia (greed/covetousness). The foundational principle: life (zōē) does not consist in (ouk estin ek) the abundance (perisseuein) of possessions. This axiom undergirds the entire teaching that follows.
Pleonexia in Greek means 'the desire to have more' and was considered a root vice in both Jewish and Greco-Roman ethics. Jesus addresses it as a universal human problem, not just this man's issue.
Jesus broadens His response from the individual to the entire crowd, identifying greed as a universal spiritual danger.
The man's request becomes a teaching moment for everyone. Jesus lays down a principle that contradicts every materialistic assumption: your life is not measured by what you own.
13Someone in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
