Jesus distinguishes between blasphemy against the Son of Man (which can be forgiven) and blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (which cannot). The Holy Spirit's work of conviction and revelation, once permanently rejected, leaves no avenue for repentance.

This saying in Luke's context follows the Beelzebul controversy. Attributing the Spirit's work to Satan represents a hardened rejection that closes off the very means by which God draws people to repentance.
