The scholarly reading

The final woe accuses the lawyers of taking away the 'key of knowledge' (kleis tēs gnōseōs). They neither entered the kingdom themselves nor allowed others to enter (tous eiserchomenous ekōlusate). Their expertise became a barrier rather than a gateway.

Language and setting

The 'key of knowledge' likely refers to the correct interpretation of Torah that should lead to recognizing the Messiah. The lawyers' distorted hermeneutics locked the door to the kingdom for everyone.

51from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, all of it will be charged to this generation.

52Woe to you experts in the law! For you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”
