There's a painful pattern here: every generation kills its prophets, then the next generation builds them tombs. Jesus is saying: you're doing the exact same thing right now -- to Me.

The scholarly reading

The second woe exposes the irony of tomb-building for the prophets: the lawyers' ancestors killed the prophets, and now they build elaborate memorials. Jesus sees this as complicity, not honor -- they share their fathers' hostility to God's messengers.

Language and setting

Ornate prophet tombs were being constructed in Jerusalem during this period (cf. the so-called Tomb of Zechariah in the Kidron Valley). Jesus views this monument-building as an attempt to sanitize a violent history.

Significance
