The irony is razor-sharp. The Pharisees spend their lives avoiding contamination, and Jesus says they are the contamination. People are being spiritually defiled just by following them.

Jesus delivers the most cutting comparison yet: the religious leaders who obsess over cleanliness are the ones making everyone dirty.

This woe is devastating in its irony. The men who dedicated their lives to being pure are actually making everyone around them impure. Their influence spreads corruption, not holiness.

The scholarly reading

The third woe compares the Pharisees to adēla mnēmeia (unmarked graves) that people walk over unknowingly, thus contracting ritual impurity (Numbers 19:16). The Pharisees, who obsess over purity, are themselves sources of hidden contamination.

Language and setting

Contact with a grave caused seven days of ritual impurity under Mosaic law. Unmarked graves were especially dangerous because contamination occurred unknowingly. The irony is devastating: the purity experts are the pollution.

Voice

Jesus delivers the most ironic of the woes: the supposed guardians of purity are themselves unclean.

Significance

The third woe turns the Pharisees' entire system against them. They're not the guardians of purity they claim to be -- they're hidden sources of contamination that defile everyone who comes near.

42Woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithes of mint, rue, and every herb, but you disregard justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without neglecting the former.

43Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the chief seats in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces.
